There are different levels of show formality, from ABS sanctioned events to less formal events where your brnach can simply build teamwork skills and have fun learning about each other’s plants.
There are a number of types of shows that are put on during the course of a year within the ABS community. Perhaps the largest is the Annual Convention. A site is chosen for it each year in a different city in the USA and is hosted by the local branch in that city. This show attracts members from around the United States as well as other countries around the world. Here lectures, seminars, and field trips scheduled as well as business meetings of the ABS. In addition to the show trophies and awards the annual ABS sponsored recognition awards are presented. The plant sales room may be a place to find the elusive cutting. The show is often where you may find that person who has been successful in growing that begonia you are interested in.
These types of shows are similar to conventions, except they are sponsored by a local branch within a region. An example is the Southwest Region Annual Get-Together. It is attended primarily by members within the geographic region. In addition to the show, there are lectures, seminars, and local trips to botanical gardens and/or members’ homes. Plant sales are always a popular event there. All regions will not necessarily stage a yearly show.
NOTE: These are ABS sanctioned shows and require approval from the ABS Judging Committee 3-6 months prior to the event.
Unlike the national and regional shows, this type is not usually held in a hotel or convention facility. The cost of these facilities and number of entries, usually dictates that a smaller facility be used. The local branch may look for a shopping mall, garden center, auditorium, or other such public meeting place. The show may be of one- or two-day duration. It may only be comprised of the judging and show of the begonias. Depending on the other available facilities or regulations, there may be a plant sale and/or seminar. The branch may share these facilities with another plant society who may also be putting on their show. Each plant society will conduct their judging separately.
NOTE: These may or may not be ABS sanctioned shows. Sanctioned shows require approval from the ABS Judging Committee 3-6 months prior to the event. Unless approved branches may not advertise this show as an “ABS Show”
OTHER TYPES OF SHOWS
There may be specialty shows at the monthly branch meetings for the purpose of judging or growing education. Perhaps a display may be put in a place open to the public or some special group as part of a branch effort to provide public awareness or attract members to the loca branch. These shows or displays may not necessarily be awarded prizes or be judged, depending on the policy of the branch.
NOTE: These may or may not be ABS sanctioned shows. Sanctioned shows require approval from the ABS Judging Committee. Unless approved branches may not advertise this show as an “ABS Show”. Click on this link for more info on Sanctioned Shows (HYPERLINK HERE).
