A branch is a community of members with a common goal – Begonias! But to keep them engaged you’ll need to come up with different ideas to spark their interest.  Interesting speakers, workshops, field trips, sales, swaps, give them opportunities to increase their collections, learn about begonias.  We have ideas that have worked for new branches as well as established branches that were declining in membership. Getting your members involved, getting their hands dirty, giving them new ideas of growing, sharing and learning and extra curricular activities keep your group motivated. Here are some ideas to help you and your branch succeed.

Setting up Swaps, Sales, and Field Trips

Keeping your members interested means giving them value. Why do most people join a branch? They want to learn about begonias. They want to be around begonias. They want to learn about begonias. They want to grow their collections.

Begonia opportunities can be available at branch meetings. But providing swaps several times a year, a field trip to a nursery, your member begonia collections, botanical gardens and nurseries can invigorate membership with added benefits.

Scheduled sales gives members and the public opportunities to purchase begonias as well as providing a fundraiser for your branch. Many branches add educational demonstrations on begonia growing or terrarium growing. Incorporate a Begonia Show, or have your sale with several other plant societies. Don’t be surprised if you get a few new members!

Setting up a Begonia show

Growing begonias successfully, even one begonia, is very satisfying. Who doesn’t want to show off their best begonia? Branch meetings often have a share component, but perhaps a begonia show will change up the program. A show doesn’t need to be competitive, but a judged show can really invigorate your members to take their plants to another level. We have some suggestions on starting off simply and gradually moving towards a Certified Begonia Show involving ABS Certified Judges and several Divisions and Classes.  Here are a few articles to get you going.
