Begonias — The
Great Adventure
May 14th -18th
Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel
Wednesday,
May 14
The adventure begins when you board the bus
and head northwest of Houston. You have a
couple of interesting stops before you get
to the home of Cheryl and Charley Lenert
where you will be treated to a typical Texas
barbecue. We have planned a variety of
games, raffles and entertainment while you
get to see old friends and make new ones.
You will also have the opportunity to
purchase plants.
Evening seminar:
Chuck McGough will conduct a workshop in
constructing and planting novel and creative
planters. He has won many awards over the
years in this category.
Thursday,
May 15
You will be taken by bus to
explore the unique and interesting gardens
and collections of some our areas better
growers. One of the stops will be Mike
Lowery, owner of Another Place In Time.
After viewing his impressive private
collection, you will have time to browse and
purchase in his gift shop and plant
boutique.
Lunch will be provided
Evening seminars:
Dan Heims - of Terra Nova Nurseries—Hardy
Begonias from Around the World—emphasizing
some of the more hardy varieties available
today.
Chuck McGough - Chuck will finish his
demonstration for creating novel containers.
Miniatures and Miniaturizing - Workshop
dealing with our smallest varieties.
Miniatures and terrarium plants will be
offered for sale at the end of the program.
Friday,
May 16
What a day this will be!
One of the stops will be to Mercer
Arboretum. This is a lovely and recognized
facility with many begonias and other
beautiful sights to see.
The other stop will be at the home of Bill
and Marian Claybaugh.
Bill has quite a collection of begonias and
this would be ample reason to visit, but in
true Texas style, this is much bigger! Some
of our members will be there to display and
talk about other plant groups. (Bromeliads,
gingers, ferns, etc.) At the same time,
Marian’s affiliation, Newport Garden Club,
will have a judged, standard, in-place
flower show using begonias in the designs.
There will be plants for sale and lunch will
be provided.
We promise to get you back in time to get in
time for the Texas-sized plant sale. We have
gone out of our way to make available lots
of old begonias that haven’t been seen in a
long time, some you’ve never seen and as
always, plenty of species.

Entering Plants
Entering your begonias or begonia art is
always a great way to share and educate and
that’s what a convention is all about.
Complete show schedules are posted on line
at www.begonias.org or you may request one
from the Registration Chairman.
We are encouraging anyone who is coming from
at least 250 miles away to bring a 4"
Traveling Plant for entry into the show. You
may enter once in each category: cane,
rhizomatous, tuberous, thick-stem, shrub,
etc.
Please let us know in advance if you are
entering any extra large or hanging
specimens so we can be prepared to display
them to their best advantage.
We will accommodate any special needs, but
please make your requirements known to us on
your registration form or inform us in
advance.
